Kumrat Valley is a breathtaking alpine valley in Pakistan's Upper Dir District. Situated along the Panjkora River at 8,100 feet, it is famed for its dense Deodar forests, vast green meadows, and glacial lakes. The best time to visit is from late May to early September.
Most travelers start their journey from Islamabad, traveling 370–385 km to Upper Dir.
• Route: Take the Swat Motorway to Chakdara, then follow the N-45 highway through Dir to Thal.
• Jeep Track: Thal serves as the launching point. From there, a scenic, rough 45-minute to 1.5-hour jeep ride takes you directly into the main valley.
Kumrat is a haven for campers, trekkers, and nature lovers. Key spots to explore include:
• Jahaz Banda: A lush, green meadow accessible via a 1.5-hour jeep ride from Kumrat to Takki top, followed by a 3–4 hour trek.
• Katora Lake: A stunning glacial lake located past Jahaz Banda, requiring an additional 3 to 4-hour trek from the meadows.
• Kala Chashma (Black Spring): Famous for its crystal-clear, icy cold water and ideal for picnicking.
• Panjkora River: Lined with wooden cabins and tent villages, offering a perfect spot to relax and camp.
• Accommodation: There are no concrete, luxury hotels in the deepest parts of the valley. Most accommodations are managed by locals in tent villages, wooden huts, or guest houses along the river.
• Local Culture: The nearest town, Thal, is highly conservative; visitors are advised to dress modestly and respect local customs.
• Weather: Even in the summer months, evenings can be incredibly cold. Pack plenty of warm layers, good trekking shoes, and a high-quality sleeping bag if you plan to camp.
